Editor Andrew Parkes has had his thinking head on again, here are just five of the thoughts he’s had this week.

1. I can’t wait for the better weather we’ve been promised to materialise. May was as cold as I can remember and so far I haven’t seen so much as a single mayfly. I know their evolutionary cycle is one of the most remarkable, but I assume they are also affected by the weather? And as for a mayflower I don’t think I’ve ever seen one, do they actually exist?

2. What is it about some people who feel the need to share their entire lives on a train. There’s always some arrogant ignoramus who wants to bellow into a mobile phone and force their entire conversation on to the rest of the carriage. I’m convinced it’s all staged just so they can show off, either their successful work life or their domesticated bliss/strife. Very tiresome.

3. In an effort to be healthier and live longer I’ve made some marked changes to my lifestyle. Apart from cycling/running more, I’ve also discovered pilates. But, another area of change has seen me eating a mountain of fruit and drinking copious quantities of sparkling water. I might be getting healthier, but I’m worried there’s a very real chance I might explode at some point.

4. Guess what I saw yesterday. I actually saw a motorist pull over to the side of the road and read a map. And, it was the real old fashioned way, he actually spread the map out on the bonnet. In these days of built-in sat-navs and phones that can take you anywhere, I was strangely buoyed up by seeing this glimpse into our past.

5. And finally, a drone story. News editor Dan was sitting in a field by Hampton Court (don’t ask!) when he witnessed a murder of crows gang up on a drone and destroy it. The first attack saw the feathers fly, but the second saw the drone come off worse as it plunged to the ground and smashed to pieces. Crows 1 Drone 0.
