Voters witnessed a predictable pattern of events in Lewisham on election night as Labour unsurprisingly achieved a triple victory.

Labour has dominated London winning 45 of the 73 available seats, the Tories are down to 27 and Lib Dems left with just one.

Newcomer Vicky Foxcroft, standing for Lewisham Deptford, generated an extra 6,000 votes for the party compared with the last election in 2010.

Ms Foxcroft, who took a staggering 28,572 votes, replaces retiring Dame Joan Ruddock, who has been MP for the constituency since 1987.

Mr Dowd said affordable housing was the biggest issue facing his constituents.

He said: "I've never had as many votes as I've accrued today and I think that's a tribute to the Labour Party and what we do in Lewisham and Penge and London generally."

He added: "It’s a remarkable responsibility and it's one I hope I can discharge as I have done previously."

Most pleasingly, only 44 people voted for the far right group Liberty GB.

Martin Powell-Davies, the TUSC candidate for Lewisham West & Penge, thinks he knows where Labour might have gone wrong - they should have been more like the SNP.

He said: "If you look at Scotland, it shows you that actually a party that's got a public profile that appears to be anti-austerity will get massive support.

"If you tell people you're top priority is balancing the books, they're more likely to vote for the party that really looks like they can do it."

The Lib Dems came second in 2010 but finished here with just 2,455 votes.

Afterwards, Ms Alexander said: "I'm very, very proud to represent this constituency in Westminster.

"Lewisham is my home and I think I've worked hard in the past five years to try and be an effective representative for my constituents."

She said her priorities would be "decent jobs, decent wages, affordable homes, better public transport and an NHS fit for the 21st century."
