BUSINESS owners are being warned to be vigilant against conmen pretending to work for Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KRFS).

Companies across the country have received a telephone call asking if they want to buy advertising space in a fire service calender.

When they refuse, the caller often becomes abusive.

KFRS says it would never approach small businesses in this way.

A spokesman said such calls have caused a problem for years.

However, there has been a recent spate of calls with around ten in two days.

Kent County Council (KCC) assistant head of trading standards Ian Treacher said: "Our advice would be, don't commit to anything and advise your staff to be wary of any offers for advertising space.

"Do not give them the opportunity to claim you or an employee had agreed anything.

"If the caller does become abusive or threatening then just end the call."
