DEVELOPERS have hit back at claims the regeneration plans for the O2 have suffered a setback.

Last week, we reported how David Campbell, president of 02 owners, Anschutz Entertainment Group, said the £350m investment had been set back after Greenwich's failed super-casino bid.

Without a casino it was believed 10,000 homes and more than 4,500 jobs would not be created.

But Meridian Delta Ltd, the joint venture between Lend Lease, Quintain Estates and Development Plc, has confirmed that the 10,000 new homes will be delivered as well as 24,000 new jobs.

The jobs will be created as part of the Greenwich Peninsula project which involves 150 new shops and restaurants, a new secondary and primary school, new health and childcare facilities and a new museum.

A Meridian Delta Ltd spokesman said: "We will deliver the creation of an exciting new riverside community for London at Greenwich Peninsula.

"This is a 15 to 20-year project which is about much more than a casino.

"The project will deliver 10,000 new homes and 24,000 new jobs and there will be a genuine and lasting community at Greenwich Peninsula for residents, workers and visitors.

"We wish Manchester every success with the super-casino and will watch developments with interest."

  • AEG confirmed it was not going to contest the Casino Advisory Panel's decision to award the super casino to Manchester, over Greenwich.
