A Sidcup couple have won a national award for spending a decade raising Labrador puppies to be guide dogs.

Malcolm and Jean Moore, of North Cray Road, were recognised for their intensive guide dog training for charity Guide Dogs UK.

Together they have trained 16 puppies over 10 years and they look after the puppies from when they’re seven-weeks-old until they’re 14 months.

The couple are responsible for feeding, grooming and exercising their puppies daily, along with basic obedience, house-training, and visits to the vet.

Malcolm, 76, also visits schools and groups in Sidcup to educate and encourage others to get involved too.

This month they have been nominated for Halifax Giving Extra Awards and were nominated by Nikki Gooch, the branch manager of the bank in Sidcup High Street.

Mr Moore said: "It’s difficult to let the puppies go when they’re 14-months-old, but we enjoy taking care of them and preparing them for their guide dog duties.

"It’s so rewarding to know that the puppies we raise can go on to change someone’s life forever."

The 67 regional award winner each receive £300 in bonus bond vouchers.

The national winner will be announced later this month.
