A SMALL group of residents will be involved in plans to build a secondary school.

Bexley Council has been given £23m of Government cash to construct a new Pathfinder school.

It hopes to use the site of the former Crayford School, off Iron Mill Lane, for the project.

Bexley Council held a public meeting on the proposals last week at Barnes Cray Primary School, which already shares the site of the proposed school.

More than 100 people attended and generally supported the idea, although there were some concerns about traffic and access.

The new school would be federated with Erith School and would enable Erith to reduce its intake from 12 forms to nine.

Erith School headteacher Toby Hufford said the proposal was "a real, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for future generations of Bexley".

Government legislation means there will have to be a competition to decide who will build and run the school.

Public consultation runs until February 28 and the results will be discussed at the council's cabinet meeting on March 20.
