A NEWSAGENT has had his licence to sell alcohol revoked after magistrates rejected an appeal.

Times News owner Sriharan Karunanithy first had the licence taken away by Bromley Council's licensing committee last March.

It did this because staff sold alcohol to children, aged 16, during three separate trading standards operations in March 2003 and April and November 2005.

Mr Karunanithy appealed the decision at Bromley Magistrates' Court but this was rejected on January 25.

He must now pay £450 costs to the council.

Licensing committee chairman Councillor Tony Owen said: "We simply cannot condone sales of alcohol to underage purchasers.

"There are known links between underage drinking and crime and disorder so it is important we send out a message to retailers and young people alike that we will take firm action against such sales in the borough."

The shop closed in September 2006.
