AN INNOVATIVE new messaging system has been introduced to help fight crime in Kent.

An internet-based system, the first of its kind in the country, allows Kent Police to alert residents to crime and appeal for their help in bringing suspects to justice.

Kent Community Messaging allows Kent Police neighbourhood watch liasion officers to contact people instantly by text message.

Officers can circulate appeals for witnesses, and where appropriate, real-time updates after information is received from the public.

Alerts can also be circulated to residents about incidents in their area and advice offered on how people can protect themselves.

Information can also be circulated by e-mail, fax and phone.

Users register for the internet-based service and choose which way they receive information.

Kent Police hope the system will encourage people to come forward with vital information, including sightings of a missing person or the location of a suspicious vehicle.

The messaging system is currently available to police-approved community groups, such as neighbourhood watches.

Kent Police aims to expand the service to other groups which could lend a hand in the fight against crime, including faith and wildlife groups.

The messaging system was launched today at Kent County Showground in Detling, near Maidstone.
