THE third in a series of four slide competitions was judged by Paul Adams.

He previously visited the Orpington Photographic Society as a speaker but this is the first competition he has judged here.

Out of 35 entries, four were awarded the top mark 10.

Two were taken by John Palmer and were of subjects from the natural world.

Husband and wife Dorothy and John Shrubb each received a mark of 10.

The marks will be carried forward to the final stage of the competition in March.

An overall competition winner will then emerge.

Dave Mason gave an interesting talk the following week called The Unpromising Landscape.

He showed society members his eye for the quirky and unusual, mostly in an urban setting.

Using digital techniques, he intensifies colours to produce a stylised effect.

This was apparent in a series of prints he called Confused Corners, where the clutter of street furniture and signs was turned into colourful and graphic images.

He has travelled far and wide and his subjects were drawn from Southwark and Hackney - a favourite stamping-ground - Gdansk, Prague and Istanbul.

The society meets on Tuesday evenings at the Priory Museum, Orpington.
