A SOCIAL worker has won an award for her idea of converting empty flats into homes for people with learning disabilities.

Maggie Shephard is based at Joynes House in New Road, Gravesend.

She realised empty flats in Gravesham could be used by people with learning disabilities who want to lead independent lives.

Mrs Shephard was informed two flats in a sheltered housing scheme were not suitable for elderly residents as they did not have a lift.

By negotiating with Gravesham Council and overcoming the concerns of residents, she saw her idea come to life.

The 47-year-old was presented with the West Kent Adult Services Quality Award for innovation on January 30.

Steve Leidecker, Kent County Council adult services director, presented Mrs Shephard with the award.

He said: "It is a really moving story about how one person's idea, backed by her dedication, commitment and negotiating skills, has opened up options for people with learning disabilities, increasing their choices, dignity and self-respect."
