THE penalty for using a mobile phone as you drive is increasing this month.
Drivers caught using their phones, risk a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence from February 27. This in an increase from the previous punishment of a £30 fine and no points.
According to Government research, using a mobile phone while driving results in worse reaction times than when drinking.
John Walton, Bromley Council's road safety unit head, said: "Research has shown drivers are four times more likely to have a crash when using a phone while driving.
"Switch off your phone and use voicemail, so you can pick up your messages later."
Using a mobile at traffic lights or a hands-free phone can be just as distracting and can also carry penalties if the driver is not in control of the vehicle.
