A NATIONAL obesity programme was launched this month and Bromley is one of the first boroughs to offer the service.

Bromley Mytime, the charitable leisure trust, started the programme last week with the aim to transform the lives of Bromley's overweight and obese children and their families through healthy eating and active lifestyles.

The MEND Programme uses scientific research to empowers children and families with the knowledge and skills to tackle obesity.

Activities focus on the MEND elements; Mind, Exercise, Nutrition and Do it.

Courses will be held at The Pavilion Leisure Centre in Bromley and Walnuts Leisure Centre in Orpington, currently the only venues in the south east running the programme.

The nine-week course is free for seven to 11-year-olds who are overweight or obese.

There are plans in place for three further programmes to be delivered this year.
