A man has died after being hit by a train at Penge East station this morning.

Emergency services were called at 9.56am following reports of a person struck by a train.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We are trying to identify the man, whose death is not being treated as suspicious, and inform his family.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Police tape blocked the entrance to a stairwell, and a railway worker confirmed the man died at the platform, which was closed.

A Southeastern staff member said: “There was a fatality here. We don’t know the circumstances surrounding it.

“Police are carrying out an investigation.”

He added he did not usually work at Penge East station but was helping out due to the fatality.

A commuter from Penge, Rebekah Chin, 23, said: “There’s been a lot of disruption with no trains and a lack of information.

“I’m not angry with the train staff because I understand they don’t know anything more than we do.”

London Ambulance Service sent a single responder by car, an ambulance crew, a duty officer and the hazardous area response team.

Trains between Victoria and Bromley South did not call at Penge East following the incident until around 12.20pm.

London buses were accepting Southeastern rail tickets on any route between Bromley South and Victoria stations.

Delays followed until 12.30pm.
