Bexley police have released alarming figures showing 16 per cent of burglaries in the area happen when doors and windows are left open.
Figures show out of 196 residential burglaries in the borough between July 2014 and October 2014, 31 took place when burglars had the opportunity to use unlocked or open doors and windows.
Bexley’s burglary squad is reminding residents to remain vigilant and keep their homes secure.
Detective Chief Inspector Gary Holmes said: "Open doors and windows are an invitation to burglars, and make life easier for them.
"Residents can definitely play their part by keeping doors and windows locked and also by reporting anyone acting suspiciously by calling 999.
"If you have a UPVC door, please pull up the handle and lock it with a key - simply pulling the handle up is not enough."
Residents should also beware keeping valuables and keys near front doors, open windows and letterboxes, as thieves reach in and steal items without even breaking into the premises.
