The London Fire Brigade was called to a Greenwich pub following reports of a suspected gas leak only to find the strange smell to be drain cleaner.
Homes and shops were cordoned off and witnesses reported five fire engines on the scene during the investigation.
London Ambulance Service paramedic Chris Hawkswell said: "Our resources are starting to stand down from the Greenwich incident, no one has been conveyed. The gas is hydrogen sulphate from drain cleaner."
Fire fighters were accompanied by the London Ambulance Service who attended The Lost Hour Pub in Greenwich High Road after a member of the public was reported to have been 'feeling unwell' after smelling what was thought to have been gas coming from the pub this afternoon.
