British sporting legend Lord Sebastian Coe is the head of the company behind plans to demolish the Crystal Palace athletics stadium, Inside Croydon has reported.

The chairman of the London 2012 Olympic organising committee leads CSM Strategic, which alongside partners was appointed to look into the redevelopment of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

Despite the Olympic team promising a “sporting legacy for London”, four proposals announced by London mayor Boris Johnson show the stadium would be taken down to make way for a possible new primary school and other projects.

A public consultation was announced this month and an exhibition at the centre shows the likes of a cafe, children’s play area, and climbing wall being added.

But the outdoor track – where Olympic champion Lord Coe set one of his world records and even made his farewell competitive appearance – as well as the one inside, would be gone.

Local athletics groups have come out in opposition of the plans

Inside Croydon says the former Conservative MP is paid £2 million a year in his position at CSM Strategic.

A press release from the organisation this year said: “With the development of new sports facilities at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, post the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the future role of the NSC now needs to be redefined.

“Its future development also needs to be linked to the long-term master plan for the wider Crystal Palace site and take account of the ZhongRong Group’s aspirations to rebuilding the original Crystal Palace.”
