Bromley Council has decided to cut the borough’s mobile library service.

The council says due to "unprecedented financial pressures" the facility will park up on Monday September 8.

The van currently operates six days a week, beginning its journey on Mondays in Keston, travelling throughout Bromley, and finishing on Saturday afternoons in Locksbottom.

One Beckenham resident wrote to News Shopper to suggest discontinuing the library is picking on a "soft target", and feels money should be saved in other ways – such as cutting the number of councillors.

However, Bromley Council says alternatives such as the network of 14 static libraries and the free Home Library service remain.

A spokesperson said: "The free Home Library service is available for residents unable to reach their local library, with a selection of books delivered to their doors each month.

"We have made and are making every effort to inform existing mobile library users about this service.

"With this in place, at a time of unprecedented financial pressures affecting every Council service, the mobile library service will cease from 6 September following a consultation process with users."
