In a first for the borough, two Greenwich roads will be closed to traffic so children can play in the street.
Instead of roaring cars, the sound of playing children will fill Trenchard Street and Eversley Road for one weekday afternoon every fortnight from 3pm to 8pm.
The council's highways committee has agreed to the plan and hopes the closures will provide a framework for other streets to join in.
Several other boroughs in London are already trying a similar approach - part of a trend called "playing out" which aims to foster community cohesion and help children develop.
Neighbours in Trenchard Street and Eversley Road had both petitioned the council over the last 12 months to introduce the scheme.
Temporary signs and barriers will be put up by residents themselves, who will also wear hi-vis vests.
