The train’s pulled up in Falconwood and you have an hour to spare, what do you do and where do you go?
In a new regular feature, News Shopper’s heading around south east London to find out the must-dos and must-sees to give a snapshot of each area.
Of course, the list is not comprehensive. Tell us what we’ve missed by tweeting @JimNewsShopper, leaving a comment on our facebook page or adding a comment below.
Make hay at Harvester
Almost opposite the station is a Harvester, and you know what that means – time to stuff yourself silly at the salad bar. Cordon Bleu it ain’t but you know you’ll get a good, homely feed.
Full steam ahead to the book shop
If you’re a railway enthusiast, or you love cars, or boats, or the army then you’ll be in another kind of heaven at Falconwood Transport and Military Bookshop in Falconwood Parade. The shelves are stacked with obscure and specialist publications.
Spice up your life
For a small area, Falconwood has no shortage of places to grab a bite. On top of the pile has to be the multi award-winning Shampan 3 in Falconwood Parade. Part of the Shampan Group – which regularly clears up at the British Curry Awards – the food is to die for.
Playdays
Taking up a good chunk of The Green, is an incredible lottery-funded playground. It’s huge, with a whole load of things to climb on, through and around. There’s a ball court of older kids and it’s generally the kind of place that makes you wish you were ten again.
Take a walk
Surrounded by the likes of Oxleas Woods, Avery Hill Park and Danson Park, there are tonnes of great places to walk to from Falconwood. The Capital Ring walk has sections leading to Falconwood from Woolwich, while the second section takes you past Eltham Palace to Grove Park. It feels mean to write that one of the best things you can do in Falconwood is walk out of it, but there you go. Go to walklondon.org.uk for find out more.
Big train, little train*
Picture: WDMES
Close to the big – bit dreary - train station, on an old electricity station of Rochester Way, is a mind-boggling mini train station and more than 1,200 feet of track. The Welling and District Model Engineering Society has had the track since 1945, and though it’s been threatened in the past, it seems to be chugging on. Public running days are monthly throughout the summer, with the next ones May 11 and June 8. Go to wdmes.co.uk
*thanks to Andy Ward (@Andy42Ward) for pointing this out on Twitter. Somehow, we missed it first time around.
Next week, we're looking at Hither Green. Send your tips to jim.palmer@london.newsquest.co.uk
