A Blackheath playing field once earmarked for a school will still be used for sports following a decision by councillors.
The Hervey Road field had once been touted as a new home for Plumstead's Willow Dene School, to the concern of neighbours who campaigned for years to keep it as community playing fields.
And, now Willow Dene is being rebuilt on its current site, Greenwich Council's cabinet has agreed to lease the space to company Community Teachsport, subject to consultation, rather than fellow bidder Charlton Athletic Community Trust.
Funding for improvements to the site - set to include a main hub with changing rooms, indoor sports, training room and cafe will be helped by a £600,000 grant from the London Marathon Charitable Trust
The 4.8 hectare site was used a sports ground until 2002 but its only continued use is now by Blackheath Bluecoat School - closing this summer.
