A creative day club for the over 60s has launched in a Deptford theatre with music, dancing and a drag act.
Meet Me at the Albany offers innovative day care for isolated older people with artistic workshops and performances as well as home cooked meals for just £6 per day.
Members can hone their spoken word skills, hang from silks in a circus workshop, or simply drink a cup of tea and enjoy the atmosphere with The Albany Theatre’s new programme of events.
Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock cut a ribbon to mark the opening of the club at the leading arts hub in Douglas Way on March 18.
Meet Me at the Albany coordinator Sally Pembroke said: “Meet Me at The Albany is open to anyone in Lewisham.
“People come for the support network as much as the arts and activities.”
Director of Entelechy Arts, which co-produces Meet Me at the Albany, David Slater, added: “The newspapers are full of stories of the forgotten and isolated old, but here they are in the thick of it, working alongside artists, sharing whole lifetimes worth of experiences, experimenting and challenging any possible preconception that we might have had about what it means to be old.”
The club runs every Tuesday from 10.30am to 2.30pm and costs £6 for lunch and activities with carers going free.
