WORK to build a new multimillion-pound sports centre at Bromley College has got under way.
Last week the college’s principal, Sam Parrett, was joined at the site by a senior figure of the contractor behind the project, as well as students, to mark the occasion.
The new £4.5m centre, designed by Pellings, will provide facilities including a badminton court, a gymnasium, a lecture theatre and sports science labs.
Bromley College’s current unit was built in 1959 and hosted bands such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Jam.
Now its principal is looking forward to the next chapter and described the move as an “exciting” development.
“Today marks an important day in the history of Bromley College as we embark upon another exciting construction project,” said Ms Parrett.
She added the new hall will provide students with more educational opportunities – adding the upgrades will also benefit the local community.
The facility was funded by the college and a government grant and is due to be completed by the end of the year.
Paul Wright, a senior contracts manager at Neilcott, the construction group tasked with the build, said the organisation is “delighted” to be involved.
“Neilcott are delighted to start work on this exciting project for Bromley College,” he said.
“In addition to providing an excellent facility for the college and local community to use, we are hopeful that we can involve as many local contractors and suppliers in the build process.”
