DESPITE falling behind 4-1, the experience of Cray Valley PM was sufficient to see off a youthful Welling United side 5-4 for London Senior Cup progression.

Wings manager, Jamie Day, was present to watch but Matt Horne and the Under 21 management were in charge of the team made up, predominantly, of their players.

Steve Chapman’s Cray Valley Paper Mills team was made up of experienced non league footballers and exciting young talent and the two teams produced an entertaining spectacle.

It took just four minutes for the visitors to go ahead when Lewis Wood headed home Harrisson Carnegi’s cross.

Daniel Oka had the ball in the net for Welling, from Wesley Jno-Baptiste’s cross but was denied by an offside flag.

It mattered little when Josh Patrick struck a spectacular equaliser from 30 yards minutes later and the midfielder came close to putting Welling ahead when his first time effort from Alex McKenzie’s cross came back off the post.

Josh Ekim put Welling ahead from the spot following a foul on Daniel Oka.

Vines failed to control on his chest when clean through before Welling increased their lead when Oka followed up after Rob Sturgeon parried McKenzie’s shot.

Cray’s Steve Springett had a header cleared off the line by Sam Corne before Joe Matthews’ headed finish was disallowed following a foul by Vines.

Early in the second period Joel Harrington made a good save from Cray Valley’s half time substitute Paul Gross.

When Patrick’s second goal put Welling 4-1 ahead, the game looked over but the visitors were not to be denied.

Springett pulled one back from Mike McKenna’s corner before Adam Gross hit the post from close range.

Further pressure saw Vines reduce the difference to one before the centre forward levelled with 20 minutes remaining following more good work by Paul Gross.

The comeback was completed when Vines again finished from close range. Welling United: Harrington, Jno-Baptiste, Skinner, Corne, Taylor, Horne (Nwanze 67), Hughes-Mason, Ekim, Oka, Patrick (Tejaiye 80), McKenzie (Callender 67). Unused substitutes: Conning, Dean.
