BEING sat outside among market stalls gives the Coach and Horses an invigorating, vibrant buzz.
That’s despite the market being empty while I was there. And before you begin tutting that PubSpy only ever visits places when they’re half empty- the market was closed because it was a Saturday night.
Eagle-eyed regular readers will notice I wrote the pub 50 yards away last week. Guess what, I wandered across the market and kept on boozing, because that’s how I roll.
It could be because it was a busy winter night, but the inside space was at a premium.
What small room there was looked cosy and traditional and, despite the land-loving name, it had a distinct maritime feel which is perfectly nice in Greenwich.
And owners of traditional-style pubs, take note, traditional is not a euphemism for run-down and grubby. And whoever runs the Coach and Horses appreciates that.
After wiggling my way to the bar, a happy big man in a trilby and tattoos served me up a couple of pints from an impressive range which included a seasonal Halloween Gangly Ghoul.
The Ghoul initially looked a trick – muddy and rough – but it slipped down a treat. The drinks didn’t cost too much given the location, either, clocking in at £7.85.
Given its tight space inside, the area outside has been cannily decked out with plenty of spaces to sit, and people watch.
It was torturous to watch the lush-looking burgers being served up to hungry hipsters while I nursed my pint and looked back without fondness to my sloppy microwave meal.
