MORE Brockley residents have complained about aircraft noise than the rest of London put together, according to a campaign group.

Earplugs and relaxation tapes are being used in the area to drown out the "unbearable" noise of aeroplanes droning overhead between 4am and 11pm.

It comes after a flight path trial over Brockley was shelved in March following residents' outcry - but campaigners say the noise is currently the "worst ever".

The Heathrow Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise (HACAN) campaigns on behalf of residents affected in London.

It says new figures show Brockley is topping the league for complaints in the capital, with other areas such as Forest Hill, Lee and Crofton Park also affected.

News Shopper: Elise Parkin is spearheading campaign Brockley Aircraft Noise

Elise Parkin, of Manor Avenue, Brockley, who is spearheading the campaign Brockley Aircraft Noise, told News Shopper: "It is the worst it has ever been.

"I use earplugs every single night and frequently stay with family and friends out of the area.

"One of my neighbours said a family moved out of the area."

The solicitor says she has been flooded with complaints about the problem which only briefly stops when there are easterly winds.

Brockley ward councillor Councillor Darren Johnson said: "We hear about local people having their sleep affected, kids concentration at school, people who have had to go away for the weekend because the noise had been that bad."

He has organised a meeting with campaigners, representatives from Heathrow and the Mayor of Lewisham next month.

HACAN chairman John Stewart said: "We receive about half a dozen emails a day from people disturbed by aircraft noise.

"To our surprise we discovered the majority this summer did not come from West London but from areas in south-east London."

One of the messages to HACAN from Forest Hill read: "I have noticed a huge increase in day time flights right above our house.

"It’s basically a constant loud droning noise and absolutely unbearable."

A Heathrow spokeswoman said: "We know noise is an issue for people living under the flightpath which is why we encourage airlines to fly only their quietest airlines into Heathrow by charging airlines more for noisier aircraft and why we work with HACAN to understand the views of those living under the flightpath.

"We will be meeting with residents of Brockley and members of HACAN in November to hear their views first hand."
