A DRINK-driver responsible for the crash which led to his sister’s partner having one of his legs amputated has been jailed for 14 months.

Barry Scollan initially denied being the driver of a Subaru Impreza which crashed into a tree in Woodbastwick Road, Sydenham, and he initially denied knowing the passenger.

The 30-year-old told police he had given his car keys to a person in a pub who he did not know before coming across the crashed vehicle on his way home on November 10 last year.

That afternoon just before 5.10pm emergency services were called to the scene and found the Impreza passenger – a 26-year-old man - trapped in the vehicle.

He was suffering serious head, arm, leg and pelvic injuries – and one of his legs had to be amputated at the roadside.

Scollan, from South Norwood, later admitted he was driving and he knew the passenger.

At Croydon Crown Court he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while over the alcohol limit, and was sentenced on August 30.

As well as being jailed he was disqualified from driving for three years and will not be allowed to drive again until he has passed an extended driving test.

The passenger continues to receive ongoing specialist treatment for his injuries.
