My story about the Battle of the Atlantic has prompted two letters from readers.

Alan Howes writes: “Are you and your readers aware there is currently a very interesting exhibition about the battle at HQS (Head Quarters Ship) Wellington?

“The exhibition is free and is open on Sundays and Mondays between 11am and 5pm until December 16.

HQS Wellington was originally the sloop HMS Wellington, and served as a convey escort during the Second World War.

Readers who may like further details about the ship and exhibition can find them online at thewellingtontrust.com”

Linda Gardiner (nee Slade) writes: “My father, who died three years ago, was in the Merchant Navy during the war.

“He never really told us much about it.

“I have been researching my ancestry and trying to find out more about dad’s time during the war, but I’m not having much luck.

“I have a photo of him and the crew of HMS Gordon at Gravesend in 1941 where he trained.

“I also have a picture of him relaxing in the Mediterranean.

“My mum used to say he went to sea from Liverpool and he was on the Tony Line and the Athlone Castle.

“I wonder if your readers can give any more information?

“My dad’s name was John (Jack) Albert Slade, born in Sevenoaks in 1922.”
