AFTER 103 years of trading the Payne family is clocking off and calling time on its Bromley-based jewellery and watch business.

EW Payne opened its doors in 1910 and boasts of being the oldest shop in Bromley.

During its time in the High Street it has served millions of people including members of the Royal Family.

Last year the Queen was presented with a carriage clock by a family member during her visit to the town as part of her diamond jubilee celebrations.

And in 1977 Princes Charles was presented with a commemorative gift by the jewellers.

In a last hurrah the closure will be marked with a massive £3m clearance sale which starts on Saturday (June 15) with prices reduced by up to 60 per cent.

The sale will run until stocks last.

EW Payne director Nick Stanhope said: “We have been massively affected by Bluewater as shoppers have been drawn away from traditional businesses that pride themselves on delivering great products and exceptional customer service.

“As a fourth-generation family member it is devastating news for me, my family and colleagues at EW Payne that we have to close after such a long history in Bromley.

“Over the years we have served many generations of our customers and their family members as they purchased pieces to celebrate special occasions or as gifts.”

In preparation for the clearance sale the store is currently closed and will reopen its doors at 10am on Saturday.
