GREENWICH’S new mayor was officially appointed at a ceremony in the Old Royal Naval College’s Painted Hall.

Mayor of Greenwich Councillor Angela Cornforth replaces Cllr David Grant in the role and will be supported by Cllr Mick Hayes as Deputy Mayor.

Cllr Cornforth is a teacher and currently represents Plumstead ward on the council where she has previously been a deputy leader.

Speaking at the ceremony on May 22, she said: "It is with considerable pleasure and pride that I accept the position of Mayor of Greenwich for the forthcoming municipal year.

"There is always something exciting taking place in the Royal Borough and I can’t wait to get involved and meet residents as well as the many visitors that come to Royal Greenwich."

The new mayor’s chosen charities for the coming year are Barnardo’s and the Prince’s Trust.

Cllr Cornforth said: "I have spent most of my life working with young people and both these charities play an important part in supporting them. I hope we manage to raise as much money as possible for the good work they do."
