ORPINGTON’S attractions of the past, present and future will be on show during a showcase event in the town centre tomorrow (May 4).

The day is being run by Orpington 1st, an organisation which aims to increase the attractiveness and appeal of the town.

From 10am to 4pm there will be fun things to do in The Walnuts leisure centre, The Walnuts shopping centre, the library and the market square.

Children can also take part in an arts and crafts session at the Wilkinson store and a vegetable planting event at A Time 4 Flowers.

The rich history of Orpington, dating from the Doomsday book, will be highlighted by the Orpington History Organisation.

And other organisations, such as friends of the parks groups, will be promoting events and volunteering groups giving out information about how to get involved.

Orpington 1st chairman Martin Price said: “Tomorrow will be an awareness day.

“We only became a business improvement district (BID) at the beginning of last month so we’re just letting everybody know what we’re about.

“There are events all around the centre, so we’re hoping lots of people will catch us.”

Orpington town centre became a BID on April 1, which means businesses in the area work together to increase the attractiveness of the town, by enhancing trading conditions and tackling problems.

The organisation which manages the BID, Orpington 1st, is funded and run by businesses within the district.
