A GREENHITHE jogger is calling on a council to switch on street lights along a two-mile stretch of road, claiming it is "dangerous" for women.

Lorraine Briggs, 52, goes for a four-mile jog along Crossways Boulevard up to two times a week.

But for the last 10 weeks around 17 street lights have been off at two separate points along the road.

Mrs Briggs, a teacher, said: "You're jogging for a couple of minutes and then you are plunged into darkness for three to four minutes, then you come out of it and plunge back into darkness again.

"As a female jogger I feel extremely vulnerable jogging along unlit roads.

"There are no houses - just large offices hidden behind wide grassy verges, with bushes and deserted car parks.

"It's really scary, I find myself jogging and looking behind me at the same time."

The grandmother-of-four added: "I tried to run near the edge of the pavement to distance myself from the verge but became disorientated and jogged into the road.

"I spoke to another female jogger and she said she hates it and had reported it to the council ages ago too."

Mrs Briggs, who wears hi-vis clothing when she runs, usually goes out at around 8pm when it is dark.

She said: "I like jogging that route and I'm not prepared to change it but it's really dangerous.

Kent County Council confirmed they are responsible for the streets lights and said they plan to fix them this week.
