Here are the top 20 things people really want for Valentine’s Day this year, according to a survey.

A poll of 550 men and women was conducted to get an insight into people's romantic side, with traditional ideas very much the most popular choices.

More than nine in 10 respondents chose one of what could be considered a clichéd Valentine’s surprise.

Just eight per cent of respondents chose a less obvious option, with some of the more creative being a hamster, a rose bush and gardening tools to do the weeding.

Spare a thought for the three per cent of people who said all they want is a partner.

Also try not to be too envious of the two per cent of people who replied simply “surprise” as their top Valentine’s wish – they are obviously very easily pleased.

Keir McConomy, founder of sales alert site LoveSales.com which carried out the research, said: "Our survey was meant as a bit of fun but showed that generally we're quite traditional as Brits when it comes to ideas for Valentine's Day.

"It's also interesting to see that people have found ways to celebrate on all levels of budget, and in some cases don't expect anything particularly extravagant at all."
