If you are booking a holiday for this year, watch out for secret costs which could considerably hike the overall price up.

A new report from Teletext Holidays investigates the true cost of a holiday, totting up all the factors - baggage fees, web check-in costs, aviation insurance and more - that can make the headline cost of a break dramatically different to the price actually paid.

Budgeting for a break can be tough, and it becomes even more so when travellers are expected to find their way through a maze of hidden charges before finding out how much their holiday will really cost.

Teletext's report examines three typical holiday scenarios, including a family of four travelling to Alicante and a couple's weekend in Paris, and reveals the potential cost of all the extra charges they could have to pay when travelling with five different major airlines.

Some of the results were surprising - for instance, the couple travelling to Paris could have to pay more than £237 extra after tax and seat reservations are factored in.

Some of the individual costs the report identifies can also take a serious bite out of a holiday budget when added together - for instance, one airline charges £12 per person for web check-in, and £50 per person for luggage.

Mark Bloxham, marketing director of Teletext Holidays, said: "With many people now opting for flights and accommodation-only breaks rather than full holiday packages, we wanted to find out if travellers are still getting a good deal.

"Many providers try to tempt customers in with incredibly low headline rates - but as this report demonstrates, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is."
