After keeping us guessing throughout most of May, that most British of vegetables has finally arrived offering plenty of home grown asparagus just in time for the long weekend and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Most retailers are now stocking British asparagus and customers are being urged to make the most of the recently available crop.

There are five weeks left of the official season and the long term forecast for June is currently very positive with warm and dry conditions predicted. Great news for UK growers as asparagus is a sun-worshipper, throwing up an abundance of spears when the weather is warm.

It was a confusing start to the season with the earliest spears being harvested in the last days of March but then only a limited supply available throughout April and most of May.

However fans of locally produced food can now rejoice that the tasty spring vegetable is here and will be plentiful throughout the Jubilee and Olympics preparations.
