The much-anticipated Street Feast is set to open its doors in Woolwich this Friday (March 2) for the first time.
The indoor food and drink market will open at 5pm and have a number of stalls selling delicious street food until late at night.
Talks with Greenwich Council on transforming he disused Plumstead Road Covered Market from a derelict site into a food market had been going for a while.
However disagreements with the local police force and environmental officers over opening hours meant it took until February 6 for the plans to be approved.
It has meant things have been a little rushed to get all the stalls in place for opening day, but owner Jonathan Downey says this is fairly normal for Street Feasts he organises.
He said: “There’s always a last-minute panic and jeopardy but we should be ready in time.
“We lost all that time with the hearing so we only had three weeks’ time to set up.
“We have had a fantastic welcome from local people, almost entirely positive. I have never seen anything like it before.”
One of the vendors selling food at the new Street Feast is Rust Bucket Pizza, a Woolwich pizzeria run by Vito Marino.
We’ve written about Vito and his specialised wood-fire pizza before when the business was being forced out of its little home in Woolwich because the building was set to be demolished, but he’s now found a new home at Street Feast.
Speaking to News Shopper, Vito said: “The council opened up their thinking hat and suggested we join Street Feast.
“They have a lot of people behind them, it’s very exciting. We just have to open now. It’s game-changing for Woolwich and people are going to love it.”
