Boxing clever in schools

Referee Mik Basi salutes the efforts of two fighters during a Boxing4Schools event

Boxing is a sport that may have had a bad reputation in the past, as being excessively violent, dangerous and probably not a good thing for young people to be doing.

All of those statements have one thing in common - they are exaggerated and they are all misconceptions.

Boxing does not need to be "just another excuse for a punch-up". It is essentially a display of skills learned.

This branches into skills boxing, a variant created specially for schools where participants pull their punches in order to effectively show their ability without injuring other contestants.

In the Bromley borough, Boxing4Schools has helped bring in this form of boxing.

The Priory School, in the Ramsden area of Orpington, hosts displays of skills boxing, which isn't done in clubs, and the young people not only show their skills in a genuine environment, they have great fun and also get a good workout.

Neil Miller, deputy head at the Priory, said: "It's taught kids discipline, self-control and given them self-esteem."

Some young people with barely any confidence in themselves have found a way to express themselves.

Boxing is also a brilliant way to get fit, and can form a core part of a healthy lifestyle, amongst other things.

Many people are concerned about letting children or relatives participate in boxing, due to the risk of injury, brain damage, or even death, because: "It is the only sport where the intention is to inflict serious injury on your opponent." (Dr. Bill O'Neill, British Medical Association).

But the risk of injury is no greater than in many other sports, and in fact significantly less than some, especially in skills boxing.

It may be dangerous, but today, what isn't?

As a hobby, it's great. So, if, in skills boxing, there's little to no risk, you can make new friends, you can become more healthy, it builds your self-esteem and confidence, is it a bad thing to do?

It`s a great idea, having boxed for most of my youger years, I no how it kept me out off trouble and away from drugs and drinking from a young age.
But a mistake I done was I but all my efford into boxing and neglect my school work , as you can propably tell from my grammer.
So if you are doing boxing it is very inportant to do well at school as not everyone will make a good living from the sport.
Being middle age now it has taugth me to keep fit most of my life and the importance off keeping heathy. It is bulit into subconcices.
