The Rotary Club of Orpington Crofton

GLENN Morris recently gave a talk about his love for the Arctic and the way the native Inuit people live close to nature and in tune with their environment.

Age-old methods of hunting and fishing are still followed and every part of a fish or animal is used to support life in what most of us would regard as a hostile environment.

Mr Morris has traveled extensively in the region and spent a great deal of time living with the Inuit.

He explained how they are fully aware of the world around them and are deeply concerned about changing weather patterns and the extent of earlier ice break up due to global warming.

Mr Morris would like to record the Inuit way of life, tell their stories and set down their concerns about how climate change is affecting their lives and relay them to a wider UK audience.

He is currently leader of The Arctic Voice Expedition 2007/08, a team of four undergoing a 3,000 mile journey by kayak and dog sledge.

They will visit remote settlements and hunting camps to speak to the people.

Part of the initiative to raise awareness is a number of Inuit schools have been linked with UK schools. The expedition will also visit all the Inuit schools along the route.

Club members enjoyed the talk and thanked Mr Morris for speaking to them.

The club meets at 7.30pm on Monday evenings at The Change of Horses pub in Farnborough Village.

New members are welcome.
