THIS year's events got off to a flying start with the third stage of the colour print competition.
It was judged by Roy King, a long-standing friend of the society who has been visiting regularly since 1982.
His many years of experience and resulting expertise were reflected in his astute analysis of the images before him, drawing attention to their qualities and failings.
The competition was divided into three classes. In each there was work of sufficiently high standard to achieve the top mark of 10. In Class 3 this went to Rose Wood's nicely composed and pleasing image of a ship entering harbour.
Two of the entries in Class 2 gained the top mark. One was Tony Seppings' detail of the Crossing Pulpit in Norwich Cathedral, unashamedly a record picture, which showed the carved panels to maximum advantage.
The other was Avril Blamey's Every Room has a River View - a lovely view indeed, which received praise for the way it exploited the quality of the light on the scene.
Two unusual and arresting images took the accolade in Class 1. One, by Tony Gilkes, entitled A Pondering Moment, was a study of a gorilla, shoulders hunched and staring out of the picture, apparently in thought.
In the other, simply entitled Thames Barge Ropes, the photographer, Alan Parkinson, had captured the texture and contrasting colours of the ropes to striking effect.
It was a well-attended and successful meeting.
The society meets on Tuesday evenings at Christ Church, Charterhouse Road, Orpington.
