Orpington Recorded Music Society

10:54am Thursday 15th November 2007

MORE than 50 past and present members - some had travelled from Norwich and Plymouth - gathered at Ripley Arts Centre on November 2 to congratulate Orpington Recorded Music Society on the 70th anniversary of its inaugural meeting in 1937.

The club is proud meetings have been held continuously ever since, even throughout the war years.

This was despite the problems of bombs, blackouts and the absence of members called up to the armed forces.

No problem marred the 70th celebration, however.

Lively music, very well played, from a wind quintet from the area set the tone for a very happy evening full of reminiscing and laughter.

A short, apt speech from the president of the society was followed by a buffet supper with celebration cake, and a toast to the society by the vice-president of the National Federation of Recorded Music Societies.

The society now looks forward to another year of structured presentations of classical music on specific and varied themes whether by members or guest speakers.

Performances took place on alternate Monday evenings in Orpington Library at the Priory with music played on the club's own high quality equipment.

A warm welcome is offered to members and visitors, and more information is available from posters display in Orpington and other libraries, or by calling 01689 827284.
