Bromley and Beckenham Philatelic Society
 |
| Rosemary Dellar, President of Bromley and Beckenham Philatelic Society Rosemary Washer and Eddie Shilling |
A TEAM of collectors from the Medway Towns Philatelic Society paid a visit at the last meeting.
Eddie Shilling talked about the Private Posts of Germany, which operated between 1866 and 1900.
During the time some 300 towns had their own private post and many of these were extremely successful.
Berlin, for example, was carrying about 55 per cent of the mail when it was taken over by the State Post Office in 1900.
The talk was illustrated with stamps from many towns, as well as postal stationery and letters.
Rosemary Dellar gave a two-part display - firstly on modern Indonesia from 1949 onwards with mainly stamps and then Netherlands' Postage Dues with both labels and many covers.
Maurice Flack showed the stamps issued by the Homelands of South Africa. This virtually complete collection was of commercially used stamps, more difficult to find than the usual philatelic material.
President Rosemary Washer presented 'letter openers and a certificate to members of the display team.
The Society meets in the Public Hall, Bromley Road, Beckenham, Kent. The next meeting is tonight.
