Bromley Borough Local History Society
THE society welcomed Ralph Palfrey who presented an illustrated journey along the River Ravensbourne from its various sources to its end in Deptford Creek.
Starting at Ceaser's Well at Keston Ponds, much of the southern section of the river goes through rural areas, both public and private, into Norman Park and onwards both above and below ground, by St Mark's church and west of Bromley High Street to Shortlands, and then north through Lewisham to Deptford.
It is a journey of some eight miles, dropping from 400ft to sea level.
Much of the river, even through Lewisham, still retains or has had its rural look restored with wetlands created to slow the flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding, which was particularly common in the last century.
In the past this river basin was important in locating houses, villages and light industry and, even today, on its many pleasant riverside walks offers items of interest to the local historian.
The society meets at the Methodist Church Hall, North Street, Bromley.
Non-members are welcome - anyone requiring further information should visit the society's website bromleyblhs.mysite.orange.co.uk
