NHS Retirement Fellowship (Bromley Branch)

9:46am Thursday 29th November 2007

LAST month, on a bright, cold day, 44 members travelled to Chelsea.

They visited the Military Museum for light refreshments, before visiting the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

There they were met by Chelsea pensioner Bill Fox, their guide for the day.

He talked about the history of the buildings and the grounds along with amusing anecdotes and stories of the pensioners.

The Royal Hospital Chelsea was founded by Charles II in 1682.

It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and was intended to provide board, lodging, clothing and medical care for about 300 pensioners.

There is now an urgent need to replace the present outdated infirmary.

The Chelsea Pensioner Appeal needs to raise £35m in the next four years.

Call 020 7881 5516/36 to find out more information.

The fellowship meets in The Princess Royal University Hospital.

For membership details, call 020 8462 5411.
