Beckenham Photographic Society
MEMBERS enjoyed an unusual presentation in Bob Webzell's Maasai Visions.
Bob is an active member of a group raising money to build a school in a remote part of Maasai land and all the proceeds of his talks and lectures go to boost the funds of this project.
As well as being an honoury Tanzanian citizen he is now a full member of the Maasai Tribe and has the ceremonial necklace and tribal cloak to prove it.
Although the Maasai have a fearsome reputation, they are a very peaceful people struggling to maintain their way
of life in spite of outside world pressure.
Nevertheless, it is a hard existence. A child is not named before the age of one because so many die in their first year.
Although Bob showed many fine portraits of the people, what was of particular interest was a panel of photographs taken by students who had never held a camera before.
The cameras themselves were disposable and cost less than £3 but the results produced were incredible.
The simple equipment actually enhanced the images.
