Beckenham and Bromley National Trust Centre

RICHARD and Sally Hunt gave a fascinating talk in the Great Hall of the Civic Centre.

The Sea on our Left was brilliantly illustrated and described a 10-month, 4,500-mile walk around the coastline of Britain to raise money for a hospice and for research into Motor Neurone Disease.

They set out on New Year's Day from Eastbourne towards Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters.

From January to April, they stayed in youth hostels or with friends and relatives but later slept in a tent.

They reached the 1,000-mile mark at Dylan Thomas's home on the Gower Peninsula in Wales and at Cape Wrath in northern Scotland they had completed 2,500 miles.

Western Scotland was their favourite area and the photographs were magnificent, though in August the midges in the Highlands proved a great trial.

The next meeting will be at 8pm on March 12 in the Great Hall of the Civic Centre, when zoologist Richard Ranft will give a talk on The Meaning and Mystery of Bird Song.
