AT THIS month's meeting, Barbara Stevens gave a lively and affectionate account of shopping in Downe in a bygone era.
The slides illustrating her talk took members back into a lost retail world and gave an evocative picture of the shops and cottages in Downe and the people who occupied the close-knit community.
The society's next meeting, on Thursday, December 6, at 8pm, will feature a talk by Roy Hopper of the Chislehurst Society. Entitled An Armchair Walk around Chislehurst, it promises to be another informative and fascinating story of one of our neighbourhood areas.
The Civic Society meets monthly in the Public Hall, Bromley Road, Beckenham.
Now in its 64th year, it exists to stimulate interest in the local planning, history and development of our area.
New members are very welcome.
For more information, call the membership secretary on 0208 650 2221.
