PHOTOGRAPHER David Hassell spoke to members about birds of the Shetland Islands.

He kept members enthralled with his tales and photographs, especially a superb sequence of merlins at the nest which took two years to complete.

This was followed by a trip to Oare Marshes Kent Wildlife Trust reserve near Faversham.

A party of 14 saw huge numbers of black-tailed godwits and golden plover as well as rare curlew sandpipers, little stints and a spotted redshank.

And 10 members saw pintails, wigeon and a large party of migrating swallows during a midweek outing to Riverside Country Park in Gillingham.
