Many reasons why travel is stressful
What do you find most stressful about travel? GC1822
What do you find most stressful about travel? GC1822

I CAN sympathise with the bus driver who wrote in (Bus Driver Questions Passengers' Attitude, News Shopper, April 16).

Clearly he must have had a bad day. If I had the job, I'd be sacked by lunchtime.

There seem to be many reasons why travel is stressful and all of us play a part in it - lack of manners generally, stress before you even go out and others such as:

  • Motorbikes which apparently have a God-given right to use the wrong side of the road, to undertake at will and to break the speed limit from standstill in 1.8 seconds.

  • Car drivers who passed their test decades ago and are clearly out of their depth.

  • Pedestrians who, even with children, cross busy roads a few yards away from traffic crossings.

  • The input of traffic schemes designed by "engineers" who have somehow obtained jobs and keep them despite obvious failings.

  • Cyclists ignoring all signals.

  • Lorry drivers holding up all traffic while in the middle lane.

However, it must be said bus drivers play their part too.

Sometimes it takes the ability of a circus acrobat to stay on your feet and not be catapulted into joining the driver or those at the back.

Bus drivers do not wait for anyone, especially after boarding and approaching stops when they are obviously behind schedule.

They also seem to have access to a secret section of the Highway Code allowing them to reverse the mirror, signal, manoeuvre procedure which applies to lesser mortals.
