I READ with great interest the story on St George's Church, Gravesend (Church Is Town's Heart And Soul, News Shopper, March 12). When St George's closed for the first time in the 1950s, I was the head choirboy at that time.
The choir and the organist and choirmaster Mr Haming amalgamated with the choir of St James' Church, Gravesend. At the time of St George's closure, the rector was the Rev Daunton-Feare.
The church wardens at the time were Mr Macmullan and Mr Tatchell.

It was Mr Tatchell who sold his house and moved to an apartment within the church, where he stayed with his wife, so the church would be looked after.
There is a brass plate commerating this at the rear of the church to the left of the main entrance.
Whenever I was returning to Gravesend from travels in this country or abroad, the sight of St George's steeple in the distance told me I was home.
