MAYOR'S TOO POWERFUL: Further to your lead story (News Shopper, June 30) I went to the mayor and cabinet to present residents' objections to bulldozing the Ladywell Leisure Centre to make way for an unwanted secondary school.

They were ignored. The Mayor of Lewisham decided to go ahead, saying education needs must take priority. The speed at which this decision was made and the concentration on education needs to the exclusion of all else demonstrate the weaknesses in the system all key decisions are made by the mayor, and not councillors together.

CHANGE LAW: With regard to crime and disorder these days, when, for goodness sake, will the Government and councillors wake up to the fact these yobs will not stop until the stupid laws stop protecting them? It is not necessary to bash children about to have them understand right from wrong. These kids do know what they are doing is wrong but they also know the stupid law protects them. Bring back National Service; what they need is discipline. At present, it is unfair on the good, sensible ones. In many cases the parents are scared of their children and the authorities give these kids the licence to behave badly.

WASTE NOT WANT NOT: The Government has been very slow to recognise the amount of waste being buried in Britain. The fact is we need waste treatment and incinerators to cope with matter. I work along the banks of the River Thames and a company has put plans in to the council to operate an incinerator. At present, this is still ongoing because of public opinion. This is a very short-sighted view and the Government should override any objections. The amount of waste now being collected is enormous and continues to rise. Incineration is the only way to get rid of this evil.

BARELY DECENT: Old age, wrinkles and nudity, I am sure there are no mirrors in their homes. I have the blinds down in my kitchen window in the summer, otherwise I would vomit at the unsightly view of the little old man opposite parading around half naked.

UNPLEASANT CRESCENT: With regard to Okehampton Crescent, this crescent has gone from a wide road to an obstacle course. Whoever thought this up should be named and shamed, then we can curse his/her name every time we pass along it. It is a major accident waiting to happen.
