Thank you for visiting my new blog. I thought that I would use my first post to introduce myself and explain how I will be using it.

I am the Member of Parliament for Bexleyheath and Crayford, and I was previously the MP for Erith and Crayford from 1983 to 1997.

Since my election, I have served on the Education and Skills Select Committee (May-October 2005) and was an Opposition Whip for three years (October 2005-January 2009).

Last month, I was appointed Shadow Minister for Innovation, Universities and Skills, with special responsibility for Further Education.

I will be blogging here about my work locally and in Parliament, and answering questions readers might have about the Parliamentary process.
